Business / Franchise Lawyer Position (3 – 5+ yrs of experience)

We are an entrepreneurial business and franchise law firm that is on track for aggressive growth and we need an experienced business or franchise lawyer to join our team and work directly with the owner and lawyers to support the team and help our entrepreneurial clients.

We want to be known for helping our clients get the legal assistance and business guidance they need to successfully launch, manage and grow their franchised business, while learning how to become a better business owner, in a better position, and knowing that they had a team behind them that really cares about their personal and professional goals and priorities. We are growing fast, and we need a business / franchise lawyer who can hit the ground running with minimal supervision!

This position will be responsible for important work, including:

  • Holding client meetings and providing strategic legal and business advice.
  • Drafting legal contracts, agreements, letters and other documents while taking each client’s personal and professional goals and priorities into consideration (yes, we make an individualized Action Plan for each and every client).
  • Conducting review meetings to assess our client’s current contracts and advising on legal risks and liability, managing relationships and other strategic business advice.
  • Negotiating the best possible outcome in business transactions and contentious contracts.
  • Managing your own case load and a wide variety of different clients in different sectors.
  • Following up with clients on a regular basis to check in on their business, their contract, their new hire, their transaction, etc..
  • Managing and proactively updating our precedent database with new types of contracts and new types of custom-drafted clauses.

We love to help people learn and grow. But we don’t have the time for that right now. We need a business / franchise lawyer with at least 3 – 5 years of experience working with traditional businesses, franchisees and franchisors, in asset and share purchase transactions, and a wide range of other general business services (such as commercial contracts, leasing arrangements, and shareholders agreements). The ideal candidate will be able to take initiative on work that needs to be done and complete tasks with minimal hand holding.

You will initially be brought in at approximately 20 – 30 hours per week and then gradually ramped up to full-time where you will be expected to manage a caseload. The position is virtual, but the possibility of hybrid in-person at some point in the future. Salary is expected to be $80,000 – $100,000 once ramped up to full-time, commensurate with experience. There is an opportunity for bonus compensation for those who can demonstrate their profitability as well.

The Ideal Candidate Will

  • Be admitted to practice law in Ontario
  • Be an experienced corporate, franchise or transactional lawyer with 3 – 5+ years of business, franchise or commercial transactional experience in Ontario (Exceptional candidates with extensive experience, but less years of experience may be considered)
  • Be a self-starter and independent thinker
  • Be a complex problems solver
  • Be able to handle and manage their own case load
  • Be able to develop and implement business, legal and negotiation strategy for their cases
  • Be able to manage and maintain good client communication
  • Be an excellent and efficient biller
  • Be a person that is responsible and holds themselves accountable
  • Possess good communication and problem-solving skills
  • Have a desire and ability to help businesses and owners resolve disputes
  • Be dedicated to achieving excellent results
  • Have a positive, dealmaker (not deal-killer) attitude
  • Possess a high proficiency in Word and knowledge of Excel, computerized calendaring, and task management
  • Be able to effectively manage multiple clients and matters
  • Possess strong writing skills
  • Possess strong oral advocacy skills
  • Have familiarity with, or willingness to learn how to use Microsoft computers
